Teaching your students various card games, and the grammar that they need to effectively play them in English is a great way to help them have fun while using English in a natural way. And students who are shy about speaking out loud in class may be more comfortable in these smaller groups. For advanced students, you can pick a more difficult word for them to try to guess. But if your class has both, this game may get shy students to take risks and even be a bit silly.
This is just an example of a setup I use for intermediate university level classes. Ask each team to create a definition for this word and write it on one of the small pieces of paper provided. This one is based on the classic board game Balderdash, a game I always love playing with my friends, so I thought, why not find a way to bring it to the classroom? The object is to create a definition that seems so real it will trick the other teams into choosing it. Practice past tense verbs. Now you can make use of all the candy wrappers you have left over from Dictionary. They get points for presentation, originality, and creativity. The more outside-the-box they get, the better.
